Chelated Iron Supplement
Chelated Iron Supplement Chelated, or circulatory, iron is a form of iron that is well-absorbed by the human body. In this particular formulation the iron is enhanced with calcium, Vitamin C as well as a unique base of chickweed herb, rose hips, thyme herb, mullein leaves and yellow dock root. Iron is used by the human body to make myoglobin which supplies oxygen for muscle contractions and hemoglobin which is the central molecule that makes up red blood cells. These travel to the lungs in order to pick up oxygen and take it to the tissues. Iron is also involved with the metabolism of energy. Hemoglobin is also involved with removing waste products from our bodies such as carbon dioxide. When someone’s hemoglobin is low then they suffer from anemia which means that their hemoglobin is no able to supply enough oxygen to the body or remove excessive carbon dioxide. This leaves a person feeling fatigued, weak, having a lower concentration level, may experience internal bleeding, have pale skin color, irritable, have shortness of breath, have a sore tongue, brittle nails, decreased appetite, experience unusual food cravings, experience frontal headaches and have a blue tinge in the white of the eyes.
All adult women and men who are age 51 and older need on a good chelated iron supplement of at least 8mg. of iron a day. That is the bar minimum. Since a chelated iron supplement is better than just regular iron, you should look for a supplement that is chelated. Younger women need at least 18mg. of iron a day due to menstruation. The average dietary intake of iron here in the United States is between 16 and 18 mg. for men and 12 mg. for women. You do not want to build up an excess of iron in your body as this could pose a problem. It would help immensely if a cheap chelated iron supplement could be added to cereals. This could help eliminate childhood iron-deficiency anemia which is one of the major malnutritional conditions in the developing world. Wageningen University in the Netherlands did a study and found that there was a large reduction in iron-deficiency anemia among school children in Kenya who were fed maize-flour porridge that was fortified with chelated iron. Iron-deficiency anemia affects about half of the developing world’s children. They have a mainly cereal-based diet that contains a very high proportion of phytic acid. This acid has six phosphate groups which make it a very strong chelator of many nutritional important minerals including calcium, iron and zinc. There is just one catch to this equation. If a person does not have enough phytase in their body, they cannot digest the phytic acid. Therefore, the minerals pass right through the gastrointestinal tract which does the body no good. To sum up then, it is better to take a supplement that has chelated iron rather than regular iron. It is much better absorbed by the body than regular iron. If you do not get enough iron from your diet, then it would be wise to speak to your physician about supplementing with chelated iron so you can know exactly what dose to take.
