What is Chromium?

Chromium, one of the most essential minerals, is difficult for the body to “store” as only a small portion of the mineral from dietary sources is retained and used by our bodies. Interestingly enough, the highest concentrations of chromium within the body is during infancy, with the average human containing roughly 600 micrograms of the mineral.

Chromium picolate is generally stored within the body in the kidneys, spleen, and the testes. Smaller amounts can also be found in organs such as the heart, brain, pancreas, and lungs. As we age, the levels of chromium within the body naturally decrease, with the mineral primarily excreted through the urine.

Why Chromium Picolate is So Beneficial

We need chromium to help the body metabolize carbohydrates, and to stimulate the production of enzymes that help process glucose, which are two extremely important functions. Although chromium supplements are primarily taken to control diabetes and hypoglycemia, there are other benefits to this mineral, such as weight loss and treating some cases of acne.
Some of the benefits of Chromium Picolate include:

- Controlling diabetes and hypoglycemia: Both diabetics and people with hypoglycemia benefit from chromium as it helps to regulate the body’s blood glucose levels. Helping to prevent hypoglycemia, chromium stabilizes the level of sugars within the blood causing insulin to function properly.

- Promoting weight loss: By increasing the body’s sensitivity to insulin, chromium is beneficial for losing weight while still increasing one’s lean muscle mass.

- Lowering cholesterol: Studies have shown that supplemental chromium helps lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels in people with or without diabetes.

How Much Do We Need?

Much like any supplement or changes to your diet, you of course should consult your own doctor before starting any type of supplemental regimen. However, it’s usually recommended that healthy adults have at least 80 mcg every day. Those with diabetes or hypoglycemia usually are given 200 mcg two or three times per day, while patients with heart disease may be given 200 mcg twice daily. Likewise, pregnant women, those who exercise strenuously such as while training for a marathon, or even those who are constantly under stress will also usually need 200 mcg twice a day.

Sources of chromium include chromium polynicotinate, chromium picolinate, or something called GTF chromium yeast. Some sources of chromium in food include whole grains, brewer’s yeast, brown rice, corn, mushrooms, and dried beans. Chromium can also be found in some herbs such as wild yam, nettles, red clover, and horsetail.

While chromium can be detected within the blood, there is currently no reliable method of measuring the amount of one’s chromium levels. Chromium may also be present in the hair, but would be only beneficial for measuring long-term intake levels rather than one’s current status.

Chromium vitamins are not that effective on their own for weight loss, they should always be combined with a good cleansing program.If you do you this product is excellent for handling sugar cravings, but you should also include a cleansing program if you want to loose weight very quickly.
